Garage Cabinets & Storage Garage Storage, Garage Organization

Garage Cabinets & Storage

Breaking news...there is a major crisis happening all across America. Homeowners are not able to protect their cars from the dangers of the outside world. Rain, snow, sleet and bird poop is destroying the paint on their cars. Does anyone have a solution as to how we can end this crisis? Maybe the Avengers? Or the Justice League? Wait, wait...It looks like a solution has been proposed. We are being told that organizing our garages will solve all our problems?! What?! How do we do that?

This scenario, even though fake, is a very common issue for most homeowners. The garage which was meant for parking your car to protect it from the elements has now become a storage/extra room for the home. So how does one go about getting their garage back for the purpose it was built? The best solution is garage cabinets and storage.

Garage organization systems are varied and come in many different forms from simple shelving to more complex cabinet packages. So how does one determine what they will need for their particular situation? Well, let’s break down the different options available.

Garage Shelving

The most basic way to get your garage organized is with shelving. Garage shelving can be either a stand-alone unit or something that can be fastened to your garage walls. Garage shelving unit quality can vary widely from the cheap plastic units you can get from your local department store to the more durable and sturdy shelves you get from your local hardware store or online source. So why would one pick one over the other you ask? Well, that all depends on each person’s needs and how much floor space one has to spare. For people who are on a budget and floor space is not an issue, then stand alone garage shelving units are perfect. For individual’s where floor space is a hot commodity, then wall attached shelving is the route to go. Shelving is also great for seeing where everything is, so if you don’t have anything hazardous or dangerous, then shelving is perfect.

Stand Alone Garage Storage & Cabinets

The next type of garage organization system is a stand alone cabinet. These garage cabinets can either be base cabinets that sit on the floor or wall cabinets that are attached to your garage wall. Both offer a straightforward and minimal solution to any storage needs a person may require. You can even combine a few of these stand-alone storage cabinets together to create a simple and minimalistic garage cabinet kit. You can also use these stand-alone cabinets as add-ons to a larger garage cabinet kit. Same as with the shelving, a base cabinet is ideal for anyone where floor space is not an issue, and wall cabinets are great where floor space is precious. Cabinets are also great because you can lock them to hide hazardous or dangerous items. If you need this type of feature, then cabinets are ideal.

Garage Cabinet Packages

Now for those individuals that need to get really organized, cabinet packages are the route that will give you the most bang for your buck. For most garages, this is the organization system that is used to get your garage back to the point where your car can finally find its was back to its safe haven. Garage cabinet kits range from simple kits with just three pieces to sets with twelve or more pieces; This gives you a wide range of options for your garage setup and how much stuff you are not willing to let go. These kits are great because not only do they give you ample storage space and varied garage storage at that, but they also give you work space too; This is vital for anyone who uses their garage as a personal workshop or man cave. Now you can tinker with your ‘Man’ toys and still be able to keep your garage nice and neat helping to keep peace in your home. No one likes to live with a messy individual no matter how many times you tell yourself it’s ok! Now, why wouldn’t everyone start running out to the store or internet getting one of these garage cabinet sets? Well, the number one reason would be the cost. For most of these sets, the cost is pretty pricey, but in the big scheme of things, a cabinet set is way cheaper than a new paint job in most instances.

Now that you know the different types of organization systems that are out there, how can you tell which ones are better than others? Is price the determining factor? Is material? Let’s break this down so that you can make an informed decision.

The first thing you will need to consider is what type of items you will be storing in your new garage cabinets. Take, for instance, if you use old kitchen cabinets, they weren’t meant to hold heavy items. The shelving is typically very thin. Thus the amount of weight that can be placed on them is very minimal without damaging them. For storing heavier items, we suggest cabinets that were built for garages. They typically have thicker shelves that hold more weight. Rule of thumb is to look for garage cabinets with ½” thick shelves or greater.

The next thing you will want to consider is the environment in which you will install these garage cabinets. If your garage is climate controlled and moisture controlled, then any garage organization system can be used. But if you are part of the unlucky majority that does not have a climate or controlled moisture garage, you will need to pay attention to the type of materials used to make the storage cabinets. Garage storage cabinets made from metal are the best to weather moisture and climate. Garage cabinets constructed with MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) with a protective laminate film over them are also good in garages that aren’t climate controlled, but there is one major drawback. The one issue that you can come across with cabinets made with MDF is that if they get scratched for any reason, moisture can get into the board.; This can cause the board to degrade over time. If your cabinets do get scratched, make sure you try and fill in the scratch and ensure the MDF does not come in contact with the concrete subfloor. Concrete is porous, and that is where most moisture issues originate.

Lastly, you will want to think about the layout of your garage and how the cabinetry will work with it. Since there are many garage cabinet kits, you will want to make sure that the kit offers the right mix of storage and work surfaces, so you can use your garage for more than storing your items. Having ample storage space is great, but we all know that garages are used for more than just that, and you will want to make sure that this multi-functional space can park your cars, store your items, and let you work on your hobbies. An ideal way to maximize your space is to have custom cabinetry made, but most people are not lucky enough to get that. So the next best option is to look for a kit that has all the things you need or to just piece together a garage storage set that will give you what you desire.
